Amherst County Adult Detention Center Overview

Amherst County Adult Detention Center, also called ACADC, is operated by the Blue Ridge Regional Jail Authority. It is the primary local detention facility identified for Amherst County in the research. The facility is a regional adult detention center/local jail facility, not a state prison, BOP institution, or ICE detention center.

ACADC holds adult pretrial detainees, local sentenced inmates, work-release inmates, and people assigned through the Blue Ridge Regional Jail Authority. The official facility page lists Major D. The best facility-specific population numbers come from ACADC's own 2024 annual report and the 2025 Board of Local and Regional Jails capacity report. The 2024 ACADC report lists 397 average daily population, based on 315 males and 82 females. The 2025 capacity report lists Blue Ridge Regional-Amherst with 340 rated capacity and 767 actual capacity including double-bunking.

BRRJA visitation rules apply to ACADC. Visitors must be on the inmate's visitation list, show valid picture ID that is not damaged or altered, leave personal belongings in vehicles, and follow dress code and electronics restrictions. Visitors are subject to search. No more than three adult visitors are allowed at one time, and a former inmate must wait six months before visiting any BRRJA inmate.

BRRJA lists substance abuse, education, life skills, religious programs, DMV Connect, library, pre-release, progressive release, re-entry, H.E.M., weekender, work release, and workforce programs. The work release program is for low-risk, non-violent offenders without sex crimes, gang affiliations, or active protective orders. Participants pay room and board and obligations such as child support, fines and costs, or restitution.

Workforce and work-detail crews can serve participating localities through landscaping, maintenance, snow removal, grounds keeping, janitorial work, painting, trash pickup, and similar tasks. Inmates must meet BRRJA criteria and stay in good standing. These programs explain why ACADC has a separate Saturday work-release visitation block.
